Te āo Māori loses a great man

Mr Whiu was the Police Iwi Liasion officer and over recent months he was gravely ill with cancer. He will be remembered by the masses as a man with a big heart and grand love for his people and his work.

This morning the people of Ngāti Tawake ki te Wao Kū lost a pillar of their community.

He was widely known as a weaver of people who upheld the law and was a strong influential figure wha paved the way for all Māori Police officers.

He built the bridge between Police and Māori in many times of need and a member of his family described him as a humble man with a heart devoted to Māoridom.

Whiu was honoured with a QSM in 2001 for his tireless efforts and on Waitangi Day he was awarded with the Silver Merit Award for his outstanding contribution to Māori and the Māori Wardens in the 40 years he was on the force.

Whiu grew up in Mataraua his principle Marae being Kaingahoa at the foot of Mongero. He descends from Ngai Tawake ki te Wao Kuu, Te Atihaunui ā Paparangi and Ngāpuhi.

The flame of Paddy Whiu will never be extinguished, it will live on forever. Many will still hear his voice and feel his warmth with the legacy he has left behind.
