Rongomaitehuatahi and Sam Clark are pillars of the hockey scene in Whakatane and for a long time now they have coached the Waiohau Womens team
They are a couple who are known for their nuturing of many generations, whether they be Maori or Pakeha.
Hockey in the areas surrounding Whakatane has always been strong.
In earlier years, the majority of the teams that played were from Tuhoe.
The Waiohau team was full of Māori players, today, however, they welcome all players, no matter who they are and where they are from.
Many generations believe that if it wasn't for the both of them, the number of players in this area would drop off.
Despite the fact that there are not as many Māori hockey teams around now as there were in past years, Rongo is still pleased that Waiohau still stands today.
Theres the hope that the legacy of the Waiohau team will carry on in years to come.
