Firefighters race up Auckland's Sky Tower

750 firefighters from around Aotearoa and abroad will take part in this year's Firefighters Stair Climb, where they race from the bottom to the top of Auckland's Sky Tower.

The event is celebrating its 11th year as a fundraiser for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand, and will kick off tomorrow Saturday 23 May.

The firefighters race up 1,103 Sky Tower steps - or 51 flights, wearing 25kg of full firefighting gears.  The Sky Tower stands as the tallest man-made structure in the Southern Hemisphere.

The event itself has grown with great interest from sponsors and supporters.

Already this year's participants have raised over $930,000, last year they raised over $915,000 and in 2013, had raised close to $489,000.

From today until Sunday 24 May, the Sky Tower will glow red and white in support of the 750 firefighters and their cause to help Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand.
