Police release name of 3 year old boy who died in Taupo

Police have named a three-year-old boy who died after being admitted to Taupo with critical injuries as Moko Sayviah Rangitoheriri.

A 26-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man from Taupo have been charged with assault on a child and appeared at Rotorua District Court today, both parties have been remanded in custody to reappear at Taupo District Court on 10 Sept. Interim name suppression is in place for both of them.

The young boy was admitted to Taupō Hospital with critical injuries on Monday afternoon and while preparations were underway to transfer him to Starship Hospital, he passed away.

The investigation into how Moko died is ongoing.

A post mortem examination began yesterday in Auckland and will continue today; as will the forensic examination of a property on Marshall Avenue, Taupo.

Police say support is being provided to Moko's parents.
