Tāmaki Makaurau Kapa Haka Regionals 2016- Te Waka Huia

Defending champions of the 2014 Tāmaki Makaurau Senior Kapa haka regionals, Te Waka Huia are the eleventh team to perform at the Vector Arena in Auckland City.

The team was first established in 1981 by Dr. Ngapo Wehi and his wife, the late Pimia Wehi when their whānau relocated from Waihirere in Gisborne to Auckland. The group is now led by Tāpeta and Annette Wehi and have a long-standing record of excellence, placing in the top tier of elite haka groups.

In 1986, they made kapa haka history being the first group to win a national competition as debutantes to the event, and since then have acquired five national championships in total.

The item they’ve chosen to share today is their Poi titled 'Māui Tinihanga' composed by the Wehi whānau and Tumanako Farrell.
