Treaty Principles Bill: How to make a Select Committee submission in 6 easy steps

So it’s Tuesday afternoon, and you still haven’t submitted on the Treaty Principles Bill. You want to - but there are some parts of the process that you’re not clear about.

Well, you’re not alone. Te Ao Māori News has received messages asking for help in submitting for the Treaty Principles Bill, so we decided to make a step-by step on how to submit to select committee.

1. Go to the parliament government website and find the bill you wish to make a submission. To submit for the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi click this link.

2. Select if you’re submitting as an individual or on behalf of an organisation.

3. Select whether you want to make an oral submission which means present your views to the committee in person or online. And press ‘next’.

4. Enter your contact details: first name, last name, email address and phone number. And press ‘next’.

5. Now you either upload a submission as a document or fill out the submission form which has two parts.

a. The first section is your comments on the bill. This can be as simple as “I oppose/support the bill” but is recommended you give reasons why but not required.

b. The second is your recommendations which can be as simple as I recommend the bill is/isn’t passed.

6. After pressing ‘next’ confirm the Privacy Statement and press ‘submit’.

The public has until 11.59pm tonight to submit for the Treaty Principles Bill so now is the time to get in any last minute submissions.

Koekoeā, a group providing accessible information and workshops on the treaty principles bill, made a TikTok video to show making a simple submission takes less than two minutes.
