28th Māori Battalion

The motu has bid farewell to Tā Bom Gillies, the last surviving veteran of the 28th (Māori) Battalion.

Hundreds arrive in Rotorua for the Tangihanga of Tā Bom Gillies.

The tangihanga to honour the life of the last surviving member of the 28th Māori Battalion Sir Robert ‘Bom’ Gillies will be mourned by Te Arawa and Tainui waka on Saturday,

The son of a late soldier who played for the 28th Māori Battalion Rugby team is calling for more recognition of their exploits.

Whānau celebrate the return of medals.

The pou will be put near the Cassino Railway Station where more than 100 Māori Battalion soldiers fought and died in 1994.
